However, compared with the 311 earthquake in 2011, the scale of the plant was slightly smaller than that of the plant. Although the wafers in the process of manufacturing the equipment were damaged by the earthquake, the semi-finished products that have not been processed are all normal. In 2011, Renesas and even the semi-finished products were completely destroyed. At that time, the improvement strategy of learning lessons was demonstrated in this earthquake disaster.
However, the epicentre of the August earthquake was quite close to the Renesas Chuanxiong plant, which caused the rebuilt factory to suffer secondary damage and reduced production capacity. However, with the assistance of customers, supply chain and other related parties, it has returned to normal production capacity as soon as possible. At present, the Business Operational Continuity Plan (BCP) is still not perfect and must be further reviewed and improved.
Regarding the process of acquiring Intersil, Wu Wenjing pointed out that it has obtained permission from the US Department of Defense and the mainland anti-monopoly unit, and it is estimated that the merger will be completed in the first half of 2017. Intersil is different from other companies that set up headquarters in Silicon Valley. The overall corporate culture has much in common with Renesas. Intersil was once the semiconductor division of RCA and GE, and it was quite similar to Renesas.
In addition, as a vertical integration manufacturer (IDM), the layout policy that emphasizes the essence of manufacturing also coincides with Renesas. Intersil once developed a variety of careers, but now it is still focusing on industrial equipment and automobiles and other professional fields that emphasize fineness and corporate trust. From then on, the company will improve its revenue and intend to make the overall performance even higher. Wu Wenjing explained that he had dealt with the merger case after a lot of purchases, but Intersil and Renesas complemented and matched more than he expected.
However, in terms of R&D, Renesas and Intersil still have shortcomings even if they work together, and are currently negotiating countermeasures. Engineers with simulated lead rates are in short supply worldwide, and Intersil has nearly 400 engineers in the analog field. If you want Renesas to find 400 engineers, it will take a lot of time, and in this regard, the acquisition of Intersil is quite valuable.
Intersil has a variety of general-purpose products. In the past, Renesas focused on large-scale customer service and was not good at comprehensive marketing. Although it will maintain a cooperative relationship with large customers in the future, but faced with the advent of the Internet of Things (IoT) era, products such as microprocessors should be more active in promoting comprehensive marketing, and will be combined with Intersil's general-purpose product layout.
On the other hand, although Intersil is skilled in the field of industrial equipment, it has not made significant achievements in the automotive market. In the future, if we rely on Renesas' business channel, our performance is expected to increase.
For Renesas, the acquisition of Intersil is expected to take its power and other technologies into its own. And Renesas has been positively evaluated in Japan and Europe. If it can cooperate with Intersil, which is good at North America and mainland China, the business scope will be expanded.
In addition to Intersil, Renesas may continue to purchase and sell companies such as RF, sensors, and information security. Wu Wenjing pointed out that Renesas' acquisition is not limited to semiconductor manufacturers. If necessary, it may also initiate mergers or business cooperation with operators who hold specific IP or software rights.
Regarding the new wave of mid-term business plans released by Renesas in November 2016, Wu Wenjing said that in terms of turnover growth target, it is hoped that it will be greatly improved in the short term. The 2016 fiscal year will be the base, and the impact of exiting non-core businesses has also ended, market demand is expanding, and it is estimated that 2017 fiscal year will be more successful. The content of the new wave of medium-term business plan is not much different from the previous strategy. The automotive industry will continue to strengthen its self-driving technology layout, industrial equipment, smart city and environmental fields, and expect growth.
In terms of automobiles, Renesas microprocessors have been recognized in various fields, especially in the automotive sector. Although many semiconductor manufacturers have joined the market, Renesas still has the upper hand. Wu Wenjing explained that the Renesas Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) has gradually grown in terms of industrial equipment, but the IoT part has a slower layout.
