[High-tech LED News] Recently, GT Advanced Technologies Inc. announced that it has acquired Confluence Solar, Inc., a developer of continuously-fed Czochralski (CCz) crystal growth technology HiCzTM. When the acquisition agreement is reached, GT will pay Confluence Solar shareholders $60 million in cash and a $20 million cash profitability payment plan.
GT said that through this acquisition, it will add an innovative technology to GT's solar portfolio, which is in line with its strategy to develop next-generation crystal growth solutions, and thereby reduce solar costs. With Confluence's HiCzTM technology, the cost of producing monocrystalline silicon wafers is expected to be lower than the cost of producing monocrystalline silicon wafers using traditional pulling methods, which enable flexible production of advanced materials for next-generation cell structures.
The main goal of GT is to become a major equipment supplier in the Tirafa monocrystalline silicon market by promoting the practical application of the acquired technology, and successfully entered a new segmentation market. It is expected to launch a commercial Tirafa monocrystalline silicon device portfolio in fiscal year 2013.
In addition, GT also announced that it is expected to launch MonoCastTM growth technology at the end of Q2, which will enhance the quality of materials produced in its industry-leading directional solidification process and allow customers to benefit from the investment in GT's DSS polysilicon furnace.
