According to the statistics of the High-tech LED Industry Research Institute (GLII), the total output value of China's LED industry in 2012 reached 205.9 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 34%. Among them, the output value of LED upstream epitaxial chips, midstream packaging and downstream applications were 7.2 billion yuan, 39.7 billion yuan and 159 billion yuan respectively, up 20%, 24% and 37% respectively. MOCVD holds 917 units
In 2012, the number of MOCVD in China's LED industry increased from 803 in 2011 to 917, the number is close to three times that of 2010, and the total capacity exceeded 10 times in 2010. At the same time as the epitaxial production capacity has increased significantly, the utilization rate of China's MOCVD capacity in 2012 was only about 30%, and the operating rate was only about 50%. LED epitaxial chip industry scale of 7.2 billion yuan In 2012, China's LED epitaxial chip industry reached 7.2 billion yuan, an increase of 20% compared with 6 billion in 2011. In 2012, the actual output of China's LED chips exceeded 4 times in 2010, and the output value only increased from 4 billion yuan in 2010 to 7.2 billion yuan, an increase of less than double. The main reason is that the average price of LED chips has dropped by more than 60% between 2010 and 2012.
In 2012, China's LED chips are still mainly used in the low-end market such as display screens, light strips, indications, and some indoor lighting, while high-end market chips still rely on imports. Although the demand in the low-end market is strong, the growth of market demand is far lower than the growth of capacity. The oversupply has led to a rapid decline in the price of LED chips.
In 2012, the price of LED chips in China continued to decline sharply in 2011. The average price dropped by 32% year-on-year. The average price of some products such as low-power LED blue-green chips for display screens dropped by more than 50%. Red-yellow LED chips are much smaller than blue-green LED chips. In 2012, China's LED chip industry's net interest rate performance was a breakeven or even a loss, which eventually led to the loss of most companies, the upstream industry entered the survival of the fittest. LED midstream packaging industry scale 39.7 billion yuan
In 2012, the scale of China's LED packaging industry reached 39.7 billion yuan, an increase of 24% over the 2011 total of 32 billion yuan. In 2012, the number of companies involved in LED packaging in China increased from 1,700 in 2011 to 1,750. In 2012, more than 200 LED packaging companies were eliminated in China, and more than 250 new companies involved in LED packaging. At present, the proportion of LED companies that are purely packaged does not exceed 15%, which is 5 percentage points lower than that of 2011. At the same time, some LED application companies began to involve the production of LED package products.
The LED packaging industry has gone through the high-margin era and is currently maintaining normal gross margin. In 2012, the average price of LED lighting white-light encapsulating devices in China dropped by more than 30%. The rapid decline in the price of packaged devices has prompted packaging companies to develop products with high profit margins and strong demand in the application field. For example, in 2835, the power products are favored by the application enterprises with high luminous efficiency and high cost performance, and their gross profit margin exceeds 30%, which has become the main profit growth point of the packaging enterprises.
As of the end of 2012, more than 30% of the main products of indoor lighting, such as LED fluorescent tubes, LED downlights and LED panel lights, have selected medium-power products such as 2835, 5630 and 3030 as light sources. GLII expects that in 2013, this proportion will be increase rapidly. See chart 4

LED downstream application industry scale of 159 billion yuan
In 2012, the scale of China's LED application industry reached 159 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 37%. LED applications have become the fastest growing segment of the upstream, midstream and downstream industries. China has become the world's leading LED application product production base. In addition to LED large-size backlight products, more than 65% of global LED application products are produced in China in 2012.
At present, the number of LED application companies in China exceeds 10,000, of which more than 75% of traditional lighting companies have begun to involve the production of LED lighting products. GLII expects that this proportion will increase to around 90% in 2013.
According to recent investigations by Gaogong LED, in 2012, China's LED fluorescent tubes, LED bulbs, LED panel lights, LED downlights and other indoor lighting products increased by 18.7% in 2012, and the average price dropped by 23%.
The price of LED lamps continues to decline, shortening the price gap between LED lighting products and traditional lighting products, making LED lighting products more acceptable to consumers, effectively promoting the popularity of LED lighting. LED applications are becoming more widespread and penetration will increase rapidly. See chart 5![]()
