According to foreign media reports, Uber announced today that it has acquired New York artificial intelligence (AI) technology startup Geometric Intelligence.
At the same time, Uber announced the establishment of the "Uber AI Labs". The lab is located in San Francisco and consists of 15 employees of the recently acquired Geometric Intelligence, focusing on artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies.
The Uber Artificial Intelligence Lab will be led by the founder and CEO of Geometric Intelligence, Gary Marcus.
Currently, Uber's research team in Pittsburgh is already engaged in machine learning research, but this part of the research mainly addresses autopilot related issues. The newly formed "Uber Artificial Intelligence Lab" will focus on a broader range of artificial intelligence research and will impact a range of potential applications, such as route planning.
According to industry insiders, Uber's move is also emulating large technology companies such as Google (microblogging), Apple and Microsoft, and does not limit its business to a single area.
Currently, Uber has invested heavily in autonomous vehicles and trucks, and the development of more advanced artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies will help ensure the success of these efforts.
Given that Google, Facebook and Apple have invested a lot of resources in this area, it is also wise for Uber to upgrade its related R&D capabilities by acquiring an artificial intelligence team.
