The market for LCD TVs that use LEDs for backlighting is rapidly advancing with the development momentum that no one expected. Lin Xiujie of Techno System Research in Japan said that if the production plans of TV manufacturers and panel makers are accumulated, "the output of LED-backlit TVs in 2010 will reach 73.5 million units." However, because the supply of materials such as light guide plates and their production materials such as resins, optical plates, semiconductors, and power transformers cannot be kept up, Lin Xiujie expects that the market size in 2010 will actually be 45 million units. Even so, it is more than 10 times that of 4 million units in 2009 (Figure 1).
The reason why TV manufacturers and panel makers actively promote LED-backlit LCD TVs is the power consumption regulations of countries around the world. Especially after 2011, the regulations for large-screen TVs above 46 inches are more stringent. "Energy Star" (Electric Product Power Saving System implemented in 7 countries such as the United States) has set very strict standards: in the case of TVs of 50 inches or more, regardless of the screen size, the power consumption must be in 2012. Later it will fall below 108W (Figure 2). "As a measure to cope with these regulations, TV manufacturers and panel makers are actively promoting the LEDization of backlights," Lin said.

On the next development trend of LED-backlit LCD TVs, Lin Xiujie delivered a speech at the 7th TSR Seminar 2010 held on April 27. The author will introduce the development trend of Lin Xiujie from three perspectives: (1) supply of LED backlight components; (2) strategy of major LCD panel manufacturers; and (3) LED backlight LCD panel technology.
Although the supply of chips is increasing, the light guide plate is basically out of stock.
First, regarding the core component of the LED backlight, the blue LED (combined with the yellow phosphor as a white LED), Lin Xiujie said that "the supply capacity has increased significantly." In particular, Taiwan LED manufacturers, which are highly anticipated as the backbone of OEM supply, are beginning to expand their production capacity. Therefore, Lin Xiujie said that “for panel makers and TV manufacturers, it should become a positive factor for procurement to stabilizeâ€.
Among the difficulties encountered in the procurement of parts, the problem is more serious is the light guide plate. Lin Xiujie pointed out that "material shortage is a fundamental problem." Light guide plate material - acrylic resin takes two years from investment to mass production, so Lin Xiujie said that "there is no expectation of rapid supply expansion in the past one to one and a half years." On the other hand, compared with panel makers in Korea and Japan, Taiwanese manufacturers with less LED backlight LCD panels are actively promoting LED backlighting. Lin Xiujie believes that in the third quarter of 2010, "almost all TV manufacturers and panel makers will worry about the shortage of light guides."
It is expected that only one of the seven large-scale acrylic resin manufacturers in Japan, Taiwan, and Korea will expand the supply capacity of acrylic resin for light guide plates in the past one to one and a half years. The reason why large acrylic resin manufacturers adopt a negative attitude toward equipment investment is that although the performance of the resin for the light guide plate is higher than other uses, the unit price is lower. Therefore, Lin Xiujie believes that this is "a fundamental problem."
Worried that there will be insufficient supply of materials, not only the light guide plate and its manufacturing material acrylic resin. Lin Xiujie pointed out that if no measures are taken in the long run, "the supply of PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) for reflectors will also be insufficient."
