According to data from the high-tech industry, in 2012, the total sales of its third-generation energy-saving lamps LEDs rose by nearly 34%. The most commendable is the sudden explosion of LEDs in the less competitive civilian market.

In the first half of 2013, LED consumer market sales and sales increased by more than 150% and 300% respectively.

As a new generation of energy-saving light source, the current price of LED is 6-10 times higher than that of rare earth fluorescent lamps with the same light efficiency, but the energy saving effect of LED is better. For public places with large power consumption, LEDs are more cost-effective to install.

In addition, after the price of rare earths soared and fell rapidly, the prices of rare earth fluorescent lamps rose and fell. However, the rapid increase and the high price increase gradually eroded the confidence of merchants, resulting in a sharp drop in orders.

Wu Hong, director of the Shanghai Lighting Society, said that the operating rate of the rare earth fluorescent lamp industry is only 40% to 50%. It is normal for enterprises to start and stop, and the days are very bad. “Now is the time for the industry to embrace the winter.”

The crisis of rare earth energy-saving lamps has fostered a rare opportunity for the rise of LED. The reporter learned that some manufacturers have switched from rare earth fluorescent lamps to LEDs. For example, the proportion of LEDs for solar lighting (600261) has increased from 10% last year to 28%.

"Before 2011, the industry expects LED lights to replace rare earth energy-saving lamps for 10 years. It seems that it will not take so long," said Wu Hong, director of the Shanghai Lighting Society.
