[Abstract] The robot FORPHEUS developed by Omron can teach you how to play ping-pong and gain Guinness World Records.
Tencent Digital (Shawn) If you plan to improve your table tennis skills, Japan has a robot that can serve as your coach – it even earned a Guinness World Record with its own training abilities.
This robot was developed by Japanese electronic equipment manufacturer Omron and was named FORPHEUS. With its "unique technical intelligence and educational capabilities", it won the title of "the world's first robot table tennis coach" awarded by the Guinness Book of Records.
With built-in vision and motion sensors, FORPHEUS can track the ping-pong trajectory and control the bat's shot. According to reports, its camera can track table tennis 80 times per second.
In addition to tracking table tennis, FORPHEUS's camera can also help it play the role of coach. It can display the placement of the ping-pong ball through projections to help the opponent hit the ball. In addition, its algorithms and artificial intelligence can also be used to assess the technical level of players, thus providing more suitable training courses for each other.
Omron said that FORPHEUS can not only teach people to play table tennis, but also make the relationship between humans and robots more harmonious. "Now it's humans teaching robots how to do things or teaching them," said Taku Oya, the project's chief developer. "But in the next 20 years, the teaching and development of robots may be entirely the responsibility of robots."
