The chip technology of touch and display technology may be the direction that users have never paid attention to before, but the touch and display really directly affect the core key points that the product is finally presented to the user. What changes will be made in the display and touch fields? What is the future of display technology and touch technology? In response to these problems, we have the opportunity to talk to Kevin Barber, senior vice president of SynapTIcs, one of the world's three largest solution providers, to discuss and understand current industry trends and directions.

Is it possible to have large-volume flexible screen products on the mobile screen in the next three years?
The future of OLEDs will be a way to promote people's use, design display technology, and incredible progress in the attitude of display technology. OLEDs will become a trend in the future, with many advantages and support for flexible display functions. In fact, the concept of flexible screen has been appearing for almost two years, but almost no products use this technology, mainly because of the extremely low yield and high price, or the large-scale civilian use.
Then, I believe that one of the future trends is more innovation in human-computer interaction. OLED and embedded single-chip technology will continue to be the mainstream of the mainstream touch display of mobile products for some time. In addition, fingerprint recognition will also have great development in the future. We also see that there are many actions in this area. In the next few years, some technical developments in fingerprint recognition, I believe, will also see fingerprint recognition embedded in the display core. Come in.
Can fingerprint recognition, touch and display be integrated on one chip in the future?
Speaking of the integration between the three, it is possible at present, but it is not necessarily the best way. The single-chip TDDI architecture we released is to integrate touch and display, but this performance is based on no compromises and no impact. If you want to integrate fingerprint recognition, touch, and display, you may have some impact, depending on what architecture we use. The integration between the three is only possible, but there may be other possibilities that may lead to better results. So our main goal now is to find the best architecture, so that fingerprint identification and display can be better integrated, and then on this basis, see if there is a better and effective way.
Is the demand for high resolution 4K the end?
In fact, for many users, he now needs some higher resolution technology to support, because he may have to watch a lot of videos, play games and so on. And theoretically speaking, what the human eye can detect, especially young people, should be at a level of more than 550 PPI (pixel density per inch). Therefore, in games and games that include some videos, more than 330 PPI is completely visible to the human eye.
Is 4K resolution the end point? From the hardware point of view, these resolutions continue to improve, this is not our ultimate goal. We also need to do more research and development and technical improvements in other areas, including image quality improvements, as well as super-scaling technology. In the end, our goal is to hope that the cost can be further reduced, and the power consumption can be further reduced, but the overall picture quality can be continuously improved.
In fact, it can be seen that people's demand for resolution has an end, but there is still a demand for the improvement of product quality. Even if the resolution of the display panel reaches the limit of human eye recognition, people will have higher requirements on details such as image quality, color and contrast. Of course, the price will definitely become a measure of the weight of the product.
How do you view the AR and VR fields?
We feel that augmented reality and virtual reality will continue to develop in the future, and there will be better image effects and so on. From the perspective of display, it will certainly support its development, because to achieve virtual reality, augmented reality, or need to have display technology to support. In fact, this aspect is still more important, that is, your view of reality and your perspective.
But touch will not be replaced. For us, we are also constantly exploring the technology in virtual reality and augmented reality, including its development. In fact, to do this, it is indeed a better interaction between people and smart devices, and may also require integration between different technologies, including images, touch and display. This is indeed a trend that will develop in the future. We are also paying close attention and will do some research on this.
What is the core value of the integration of display chips and touch chips?
First of all, from the user's point of view, the most intuitive benefits may be in several aspects, one is because the embedded solution can make the display panel slimmer, so its display brightness will be further improved. From the perspective of TDDI architecture, because of the technology of TDDI, the cost of the whole system is reduced, it is single-chip, and its sensor is not on the display, so the cost of the whole production will not increase. For the user, the most intuitive core value is to effectively reduce the price of the product without losing performance.
In addition, from the perspective of industrial design, it will bring more design aspects, that is, our OEMs will have more flexibility and more benefits. From the performance of the touch, from the overall display situation, this integrated solution for the user, but in fact it is improved, but it does not necessarily say how much it has improved.
What is TDDI technology and what can it bring to users?
TDDI's technology and solutions have excellent touch detection, a touch and display integration solution, and very advanced noise management. This solution also integrates our previous stand-alone touch technology and stand-alone display technology. The latest products are now available to some OEMs to provide samples.
The announcement we have to make is our second-generation single-chip integration solution, which is a technology that integrates touch and display. At the same time, we will build on the traditional market and expand to similar markets like cars and others. Of course, the focus I want to share with you today is on touch and display integrated solutions. In the past few years, we have also started working with some display companies, and there are two different approaches to the integrated solutions we offer. We hope to further reduce the cost of the product hardware, thus giving users better performance; lower-priced products.
What is the forecast for mobile devices that will choose to use the touch display core next year?
Perhaps the market trend of dual-chip and single-chip should be very similar. Three years ago, our embedded technology was first provided to Sony's mobile phone. At that time, there were only two models, followed by the iPhone, and then later. There have been five or six OEMs, and we have given technical support.
The same is true for TDDI. I believe that there may be two or three OEMs interested in the beginning. There are already two, and there will be more in the second half of this year. However, the market of TDDI is still in its infancy, and I believe that 2016 will see a relatively large amount.
As a supplier of three mobile touch display device chips, how do you view the Chinese market?
I think it depends on which angle you look at, or what kind of metrics you are looking at, whether it is looking at the entire Chinese OEM market or the entire Chinese market, because some may be through some non-Chinese OEMs. Some of the businesses that enter the Chinese business are sold to OEMs through non-Chinese ODMs.
We now have an annual profit of about 450 million in the Chinese market, and the global market is about 1.5 billion. From this ratio, we can see that the Chinese market is huge. Of course, while we are looking at the development prospects of the Chinese market, we also hope to cooperate with more OEMs. After all, we are the world's three largest mobile touch display device chip suppliers, both in terms of technology and strength. It is guaranteed.
Which brands in the domestic market are using SynapTIcs touch chip solutions?
In fact, five years ago, we started to do touch technology and solutions. At that time, the overall market was not very large, so this may be why SynapTIcs brand awareness is not particularly high. But now that we have more and more technologies for displaying drivers, fingerprints, etc., we can talk more and more about the market and consumers.
In addition to Huawei, we will have more partners, our market share is getting higher and higher, and we are actually launching many activities in China to promote our brand awareness. At present, there are many brands of flagship products in the Chinese market that use Synaptics' touch chip solutions, such as Huawei's mobile phones, Meizu's MX4, OPPOR3, NubiaZ7Max, Lenovo's Yoga tablet, and Xiaomi tablet and Note phone products. Including our ecosystem throughout China, we are constantly enhancing our own brand awareness.
