Industry driver
As a whole, the M2M industry is by far the largest in the automotive field, and its development has even overshadowed the use of M2M in the utilities, consumer goods and manufacturing sectors. Some analysts predict that the annual revenue of the automotive sector in 2020 will reach $19 billion. Its driving force is mainly from the EU regulations to support eCall. There are two ways to implement this mobile technology. The first is a bundled phone that "bundles" the consumer's phone to the car via a Bluetooth or USB connection and then uses the SIM card in the phone to connect to the eCall system. The second is an embedded SIM, which installs the SIM card inside the car and automatically connects to the eCall system when a collision is detected.
The European Commission strongly recommends the latter approach because the former bundling method works only when the driver remembers to connect the phone (usually via USB, WiFi or Bluetooth) and the battery is powered. The driver must also ensure that the phone is carried at all times. The embedded SIM approach eliminates this uncertainty and provides a more reliable and consistent response. Many in the industry predict that the European Commission will soon mandate the implementation of the embedded SIM approach.
M2M opportunities
In terms of road safety, eCall technology has the same potential impact as seat belts and airbags. However, there are upfront cost issues for OEMs who must install new mobile connectivity devices in their cars. Cars can generate a lot of useful information, but the difficulty is to extract the information and convert it into meaningful content.
