A patent application announced on Thursday showed Apple's ambition to march into unmanned vehicles.
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office published a patent application entitled "Autonomous Navigation System" on Thursday. Apple has been researching the patent since 2015. In the patent document, Apple described how to make autonomous driving cars more efficient, reducing the need to repeatedly create detailed maps.
The patent application states that many autonomous vehicle systems navigate based on static information (such as maps) and use sensors to identify real-time information of changing elements in order to reduce the computational needs of self-driving cars.
And Apple has taken a different approach. Apple's system will be able to automatically drive the car without requiring any equipment to provide any data and without storing any data locally.
Apple's technology plan uses computer models, sensors, and processors to predict routes.
Today, the Apple stock market rose 0.5%.
At the end of last month, Apple researchers published a paper on autopilot technology quite rarely.
On Wall Street, this is the premise. In this paper published in the online journal “arXiv†on November 17, Apple researchers YinZhou and OncelTuzel elaborated on how Apple’s autonomous driving technology can detect pedestrians and bicycles.
The paper shows that Apple’s autopilot technology relied on a program called “VoxelNet†to detect 3D objects: it uses only LiDAR (optical radar) detection, and the entire function is performed through complex computer vision and artificial intelligence.
LiDAR is the main technique currently used in autopilot technology to measure the distance to a target object and the shape of the object by emitting a beam of light to the surface of the object and calculating the time of return. Compared to image-based detection, LiDAR provides depth information that can accurately determine the position and shape of an object.
However, due to factors such as non-uniform 3D spatial sampling and limitations of the effective range of the sensor, LiDAR's point cloud is very sparse and its density is easily changed.
Although the technology has only been tested in computer simulations, the researchers stated in the paper that they think that the performance of VoxelNet is much better than the current state-of-the-art LiDAR3D detection method.
The apple that had long been low-key layout was not recognized until the end of 2016. In a letter to the National Highway Regulatory Agency of the United States at the time, Apple stated that it was "rearranging machine learning and autopilot systems."
Then in April this year, Apple obtained a license from the California Vehicle Authority to test driverless cars on the California Highway.
When the driverless car battles the smoke, Apple CEO Cook also broke the silence in August this year, said that creating an autopilot system is "the mother of all AI projects", he also said that Apple is from the "core technical point of view." Focus on autopilot technology.
