According to the Korean media "ETNEWS" report, South Korean panel maker Samsung Display has begun testing the foldable OLED panel used in the production of smart phones. The product is seen as a secret weapon to boost sales of Samsung smartphones, and for Samsung monitors, it will not only improve capacity utilization, but also help its revenue.
The newspaper reported that people familiar with the matter pointed out that Samsung Display is building a test line for folding OLED panels in its A3 line. Because it is a test production line, Samsung Display will not put production cost and quality control first in the first place, purely based on the production of products, and the production will be immediately put into test production. Once the test is completed, the cost and quality control of Phase 2 will begin in September to further obtain cost and quality optimization data.
The report further pointed out that after the test production line can enter mass production, it is expected that the single production line will reach the scale of 100,000 pieces produced throughout the year. In 2019, Samsung Display is expected to produce 1 million foldable OLED panels, and Samsung foldable smartphones will be launched in 2019. In fact, China's mobile phone maker Huawei is also actively deploying foldable smartphones, and is also preparing to launch in 2019. In the financial meeting of January 2018, Samsung originally stated that there are R&D plans for folding mobile phone products, but there is no time-to-market for the legal person. Now under the pressure of Chinese mobile phone manufacturers, Samsung is actively testing and further planning can be officially launched in 2019.
Samsung's upcoming foldable smartphone has a 7-inch panel and the screen is inward when folded. After folding, it will leave 1/3 of the screen to display time and caller ID. While Samsung monitors have been produced, most of them have been transferred to Vietnam for production. However, this folding OLED panel module will remain in Korea for domestic production. In addition, Samsung Electronics' LSI Systems Division is working with the wireless division and Samsung Display to develop driver ICs for folding screens. The degree of resolution is not much different from the existing products, so the design changes will not change much.
