Recently, Radio and Television released the 13th China Cable TV Industry Development Bulletin. Data shows that cable TV subscribers continue to grow negatively. As of the end of June 2018, there were 234 million cable TV subscribers, a quarterly net decrease of 5.031 million, a decrease of 2.11% from the previous quarter.
Correspondingly, IPTV users are growing rapidly. In the second quarter of 2018, the broadband access rate of telecom operators continued to increase, and converged services were rapidly advancing everywhere. The quarterly net increase of IPTV users was 12.2 million, an increase of 9.38% from the previous quarter, bringing the total to 142 million.
However, cable TV is still the main viewing method of Chinese households, but the viewing penetration rate has dropped to 52.35%, a drop of 2.46% from the previous month; IPTV has risen to the second viewing status, with a viewing penetration rate of 31.77%; OTT TV Ranked third with a viewing penetration rate of 30.87%; direct broadcast satellites followed closely with a viewing penetration rate of 30.20%.
In terms of on-demand, as of the end of June 2018, the total number of cable video on-demand users in my country reached 63.45 million. Among them, the number of high-definition video-on-demand users increased steadily, with a quarterly net increase of 2.149 million, an increase of 3.65% from the previous quarter to a total of 61,084 million; 4K video-on-demand users grew rapidly, with a quarterly net increase of 1.413 million. The month-on-month increase was 16.18%, bringing the total to 10.146,000 households.
As the cable TV market continues to shrink, Radio and Television has focused on broadband. As of the end of June 2018, a net increase of 970,000 users covered by wired two-way networks was a quarterly increase of 0.6% from the previous quarter, bringing the total to 169.76 million. ; Wired two-way network penetration users increased by 52.19 million quarters, an increase of 6.06% from the previous quarter, reaching 91.41 million users, and the penetration rate of wired two-way network reached 39.08%.
However, unlike the unified layout of operators across the country, radio and television are segmented and do their own things, making it difficult to compete with operators. This also makes the future of radio, television and cable television more uncertain.
