The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has accused Qualcomm of using anti-competitive measures to maintain its monopoly on mobile phone key chips. According to Apple, Qualcomm has insisted on charging high royalties for many years. In order to protect the business plan, Qualcomm has adopted increasingly aggressive tactics to withhold nearly a billion U.S. dollars from Apple as a revenge for investigations into law enforcement agencies.
Qualcomm, however, rejected this claim, saying that Apple's manufacturers "intentionally" misled the agreement and the value of Qualcomm's technology and wanted to eat a "king meal." In the statement, Don Rosenberg, general counsel of Qualcomm, stated that Apple has infiltrated the jurisdictions around the world to monitor Qualcomm’s business by distorting facts and concealing actual conditions.
Bloomberg reported that Apple believes that this system is not fair, so it decided to stop the submission of royalties to Qualcomm. Although prohibiting the United States from selling the iPhone is a big blow to Apple, if it continues, Qualcomm will lose one-third of its authorized revenue. As Apple does not pay these fees, Qualcomm’s revenue outlook for the quarter will be reduced by US$500 million.
